On Being Sick Well: Chronic Illness and Resilience
Presenter: Elayne Lansford, PhD
People can become passive and victimized in the face of chronic illness, or they can learn to be resourceful with what life brings them. The psychological aspects of chronic illness will be addressed: the internal meaning of illness, stages of adjustment, character style and illness, attachment patterns, the roles of shame and guilt, and different styles of coping with illness. Stories of those who have been able to be resilient with illness will be contrasted with those who were not able to respond adaptively.
